What's in a Logo?

Hockey fans in Winnipeg breathed a sigh of relief when it was revealed that their hockey team would retain the "Jets" name of old. The announcement was greeted with such excitement on the streets of Winnipeg as has not been seen since the strike ended.

True North Sports revealed the team's new logo to somewhat more mixed reaction.

The main logo features a fighter jet sitting atop a military-inspired maple leaf roundel, such as one would find on Canadian Forces aircraft and Toronto snow removal equipment.

Secondary logos, presumably for use as shoulder patches or on "third" jerseys, feature the team's name in a modernized script typeface, and a crest with more military aviation influence.

Decent logos all, if not terribly inspiring.

All reserved enthusiasm is no doubt due to the absence of the familiar bottom-left to top-right orientation of the Jets wordmark. Truth be told, those original Jets logos were not examples of tremendous graphic design. But they became household symbols in Winnipeg and across Canada.

At least the timing is right. Released in the middle of summer, fans will have plenty of time to get used to the new look. Thousands of Jets supporters have already purchased merchandise bearing the new brand. Jerseys haven't yet been revealed.
